Common name: Licorice Root
Part used: Root
Traditional meridian affiliation: All meridians, especially Spleen, Lung, Heart

Gan Cao (甘草) is one of the most versatile and frequently used herbs in TCM. It is considered harmonising and moderating, often called the “guide” herb (zhi yao) because it can temper and integrate the actions of other herbs in a formula. Its main functions include tonifying the Spleen and Qi, moistening the Lung, alleviating pain and spasm, clearing heat and detoxifying, and harmonising the centre. Clinically, Gan Cao is included in formulas to moderate harsh properties of other herbs, ease tension or cramping, or address digestive weakness, cough or weakness in the middle Jiao.

Phoenix Medical’s Gan Cao is sourced under DaoDi principles in its authentic region of origin. It is dried without sulphur, cultivated without synthetic herbicides or pesticides, and processed in GMP-certified facilities. Each batch is fully traceable and rigorously tested to meet EU and UK standards for purity, safety, and potency.
